STRESS+DIETING=WEIGHT GAIN

THE TWO MOST COMMON TRIGGERS FOR WEIGHT GAIN?

A recent study, published in the Canadian Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research reported stress and dieting as the two most common triggers for weight gain. “Weight gain is the result of many factors and various strategies for prevention and management are needed to meet the unique needs and situation of the client,” explains Janet Madill PhD, Registered Dietitian and principal investigator on the study. “For example, our study supports the need for dietitians to dispel nutrition and diet myths perpetuated by the weight loss industry and re-educate Canadians about the truths of healthy eating”. Sarah Ferguson, Registered Dietitian and coauthor of the study notes, “although this study uses self-reported data from a specific population, it adds to our understanding of issues related to weight gain and obesity”.
